The
last time Dr David Jenkins entertained the Friends, his subject was the
Reardon Smith family and its connection to this lecture theatre. This
talk is on Dr Jenkins’s current research project, an edition of a
Cardiff shipmaster’s letter book, to be published by the South Wales
Records Society in 2016. We all know that Cardiff ships exported coal
in the early 20th century – but where did they go for return cargoes
once their holds were clear of coal? This illustrated talk will reveal
the everyday life of a Cardiff tramp steamer master at the time and the
issues he faced at ports ranging from Sulina to Colastine. Don’t know
where these places are? Then come to the lecture to find out! |
