Peter
Wakelin is one of the most prominent figures in the cultural sphere in
Wales and the Friends are privileged that he has agreed to deliver the
inaugural address of our 2015/16 Saturday morning lecture series. Peter numbers among his publications the official guidebooks to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape – both World Heritage Sites. Other works include Hidden Histories:Discovering the Heritage of Wales, War Underground, and Worktown:The Drawings of Falcon Hildred. He has inter alia curated exhibitions on the Welsh Group and the Gibbs Collection. Sometime Secretary of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, he until recently held the post of Director of Collections and Research at Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum of Wales. In the course of his talk Peter will explore the remarkable influence of the many artists who came to Wales as refugees, particularly those who were escaping the first World War or the fascism of the 1930’s. |
