'Celebrating 150 years of the Welsh settlement in Patagonia'

A talk by Dr Walter Ariel Brooks, Cardiff University

A Patagonian of English descent, Dr Brooks is currently a lecturer and tutor in the School of Welsh and School of History and Archaeology at Cardiff University. His interests are in the fields of minority languages and diasporic communities in general, their culture and changing identities, and their relationship with the central state. Dr Brooks’s first language is Spanish, but he is also a fluent Welsh speaker, and works as a part-time tutor in Cardiff and Vale’s Centre for Adult Welsh learners. In this talk, he will be discussing the socio-economic, cultural and political processes that have affected the Welsh community in Argentina and their language and traditions since the arrival of the first settlers 150 years ago.
