Tour: Berlin and Potsdam - Art, Architecture and Palaces

The Friends of NMW plan to visit Berlin in the early autumn.

Until the 17th century Berlin was a small city in comparison to others in Europe. By military strength and prowess, with energetic and ruthless rulers, it became one of the most powerful in Germany. By the middle of the 18th century, with Frederick the Great at the helm, it could challenge the Great Powers of Europe.

From the early 19th century, Berlin became a city of international importance architecturally when several neo-classical buildings were designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the greatest architect of his time. Berlin has museums, art galleries and antiquities of great importance ready for us to explore. Our schedule includes visits to the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Alexanderplatz, Checkpoint Charlie.

On our visit to the Pergamon Museum, we will see the most wonderful artefacts and the important fine Egyptian Collection and more.

Potsdam will also be visited with its delightful Sanssouci Palace and Cecilienhof Palace. As well as these two in Potsdam in Berlin, we will be visiting the Charlottenburg Palace and Park, the favourite place of Frederick the Great and summer residence of his wife. The Jewish Museum and the Gemäldegalerie, are also there to be explored.

The price is £869 per person. Single room supplement £89.
