| The Friends of NMW plan to visit Turin and the Piedmont area in the late Spring 2015. Famed for its gastronomy and its excellent wines, this area is set in beautiful rolling hills, sloping vineyards and hazelnut woods. Here, deep in the valleys surrounded by the breath-taking landscape of the Monferrato hills and the backdrop of the Alps, lies the 11th century Abbey of Vezzolano. Here we will visit this religious site en-route to Asti. Asti another medieval town, with its red tiled roofs, elegant churches and narrow twisting old streets; famous for its white wines which are produced from the Barbera and Dolcetto grapes. We intend to stop and explore and have some wine and snacks. Turin, this historic centre with its arcaded avenues and elegant palaces will be our home for 6 nights. Our tour of Turin will cover the grand colonnaded city centre, a graceful example of town planning, churches, palaces, some of which were designed by the architect, Javarra. Javarra is responsible for many of the town’s lovely buildings. Our plan will be to visit the Egyptian Museum, second only to Cairo in the world. This is housed in the 17th century palace by Guarini also housing Galleria Sabauda. |
