As
promised, Friends are being offered another chance to visit Margam for
a Study Day, arranged in collaboration with the Art and Archaeology
Departments at National Museum Wales. We shall be exploring the site of
the house and surrounding estate featured in the Margam landscape
paintings in Gallery 10, NMW, Cardiff, which show the topography
of the estate as it was around 1700, as well as discovering more about
the Mansel family. We shall be led by Oliver Fairclough and Dr Mark
Redknap. The envisaged programme is as follows (times are
approximate):
10.30am
Arrive under your own steam at Margam Country Park
(signposted at Junction 38 off the M4, then follow the signs) and meet
at the Entrance Kiosk off the car park (no parking fee, hooray) to walk
to the Orangery for coffee and Welsh cakes.

11.00 Visit the Margam tombs in the church, and the site of the former abbey and house
12.45pm A light lunch at the Orangery
1.45 Explore the Victorian Gothic castle, presently under restoration
2.30
Visit to the new Citrus house, or perhaps a tour of
the parkland, led by one of the Friends of
Margam Country Park
3.30 - 4.00 Time for a cup of tea and departure
Unfortunately, numbers have to be restricted to 30 people, with a
minimum of 20 in order to make the project viable. Some walking is
involved, so please bring appropriate footwear (and an umbrella!).The
cost of the Study Day will be £20, which includes coffee and
Welsh cakes, a light lunch, a donation to the Park and expenses for the
leaders.
