Dr Wiliam is currently Chair of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, and a former Deputy Director of National Museum Wales. A recognised authority on traditional domestic and agricultural buildings in Wales, he has published several acclaimed books and articles on architectural and social history. Sought after by collectors today, the items made by the young apprentices of the Brynmawr furniture factory are testimony to the efforts of Quaker volunteers to provide desperately-needed help for the deprived communities of the South Wales valleys in the 1930s, and also to the Arts & Crafts and Art Deco ethos of the furniture designers. It was a remarkable enterprise, akin to the efforts of the Davies sisters to establish Gregynog as a centre for developing different craft skills for the unemployed and disabled after the First World War. In his illustrated talk, Dr Wiliam will tell the story of Brynmawr during the Depression and how the Brynmawr Furniture Company Limited came to be set up. He will also look at the construction of the furniture, and some of the notable Welsh people who supported the venture. Perhaps your own family was among them! |
