Keith
retired in December 2004 after over 40 years in the NHS serving most of
his career as a senior hospital manager and administrator in Cardiff.
During this substantial involvement, he worked at or was responsible
for the management of most of the hospitals in Cardiff. Since
retirement, Keith has taken a particular interest in studying the
development and history of these institutions, many of which have now disappeared or changed use. Illustrated with many old photographs and sometimes films, Keith's talk covers the range of hospital facilities which have existed in the Cardiff area, from the earliest which was a leper hospital established in the 14th Century to the most recent including the University Hospital of Wales. Most people have memories of being patients, visiting or working at Lansdowne, Glan Ely, St David's, Cardiff Royal Infirmary, and the many other places in the area which have provided Cardiffians and South Walians with health care over the years. Though he will give his listeners all the appropriate facts and figures, Keith lightens the talk with anecdotes and reflections from his personal experiences of what life was like in hospitals before and after the establishment of the NHS. He likes to involve his audience during the talk because everyone has a story to tell about their own contacts with our hospitals. This makes for a lively session and a fascinating trip down memory lane. |
