Cedric
Morris (1889-1982) was one of the most important artists of the
twentieth century. Born near Swansea, he led an extraordinary life
which saw him mixing with the avant-garde in Paris, helping to
establish the Contemporary Arts Society for Wales, and creating an
idiosyncratic art school on the Suffolk-Essex border. These key moments
of his life will be discussed alongside his achievements as a painter
of landscapes, portraits and flowers, as well as his lifelong
commitment to the art and people of Wales. Nicholas Thornton has particular responsibility for the Museum’s post-1900 collections. Recent major collection-based displays include Ni allaf ddianc rhag hon (2011), Pop and Abstract (2013) and Poetry, Romanticism and Myth (2014). Prior to moving to Wales, Nicholas was Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, where he worked on several exhibition projects, including Cedric Morris and Lett Haines: Teaching, Art and Life, which toured to AC/NMW in 2003. The admission charge for this event, to include post-lecture coffee and biscuits in the Oriel Suite afterwards, is £8 for Friends’ pre-paid bookings, and £10 at the door.
