Why Study Fossil Plants?

A talk by Professor Dianne Edwards CBE

Born in Swansea, Professor Dianne Edwards is a palaeobotanist who is Research Professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Cardiff University.  As well as having received numerous academic awards from all over the world, she is a Fellow of the Royal Society, has been President of the Linnean Society and Palaeontological Association and received a CBE for services to Botany.

Her talk will show how discoveries from the study of fossil plants can tell us about the history of plant life on Earth and how it led to the emergence of the phenomenally diverse vegetation which surrounds us today.  She will briefly indicate their roles in creating energy supplies and use as tools to elucidate past climates and in dating rocks.  She has worked in Wales and the Welsh Borderland for over 50 years and will concentrate on the time when plants first proliferated on land – one of the most important events in Earth history – and how they impacted on the evolution of terrestrial animals, soils and even the composition of the atmosphere.

The admission charge, to include post-lecture coffee and biscuits in the Oriel Suite, is £8 for tickets ordered by Friends in advance, and £10 at the door.
