Wales’s
universal image as ‘The Land of Song’ owes much to the male voice choir
tradition, which enjoyed a golden era during the late Victorian period.
Historian Dean Powell explains its origins, the intense rivalry between
opposing choirs, eisteddfod ‘riots’and why Wales should continue to
embrace this proud musical tradition in an ever-changing world. Dean is a former BBC journalist who, over the last decade, has produced an authoritative and very readable biography of Dr Price of Llantrisant. He has also published for a variety of local history magazines and tourist guides, and is much in demand as a guest speaker and compere. He has worked with Owain Arwel Hughes and the Welsh Proms, and with the Cardiff Singer of the World event. A long-standing member of the Treorchy Male Voice Choir, he has presented its concerts in some of the world’s largest concert halls. He is also a Freeman of Llantrisant. The admission charge for the above, to include post-lecture coffee and biscuits in the Oriel Suite, is £8 for Friends’ pre-paid bookings, and £10 at the door. If you wish to take advantage of this concessionary rate, please complete the slip below and send it with your cheque by Wednesday 3 May to: Ann Saer, 15 Highfields, Llandaf, Cardiff CF5 2QA (tel:029 20562756; email: annsaer15@gmail.com).
