This lecture will be given by one of our most entertaining and erudite speakers, Prys Morgan, Emeritus Professor of Welsh History at Swansea University, who specialises in eighteenth and nineteenth century history. Author of several books and articles, and a frequent contributor to radio and television, he co-edited the latest volume of the Gwent County History series, and is currently President of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion and also of the Cambrian Archaeological Association, as well as being a founder member of the Learned Society of Wales. He is much in demand as a lecturer, and is passionately interested in language, literature, music and the fine arts. In this talk, Professor Morgan will illuminate some of the Renaissance figures of the Vale of Clwyd and its environs at this period, many of whom were exceptionally wealthy and part of a wider European and sophisticated culture while also taking pride in their Welsh heritage. Though Wales was a small and impoverished country generally, expensive articles like the Mostyn silver gilt bowl and ewer in Gallery 10, NMW Cardiff could be found in the great houses of north-east Wales, and visitors who dined there would have had an awareness of contemporary ideas and fashions beyond the borders. The admission charge for this event, to include post-lecture coffee and biscuits in the Oriel Suite afterwards, is £8 for Friends’ pre-paid bookings, and £10 at the door.
