The Friends of National Museum Wales have arranged a tour of the prosperous Friuli Venezia Giulia region in the North East of Italy. Much of this area was ceded to Italy only after the First World War and is bound by Austria, Slovenia and Veneto.

We will be staying in the charming historical centre of Udine. Udine is a town with squares of Venetian charm such as the Piazza Liberta, ancient and colourful historical buildings and a medieval castle on the hill overlooking the town.

In this region there are many historic towns where we can observe many periods of Italian art and architecture ranging from Roman to modern:
  • Aquileia, with its immense archaeological site and basilica is an artistic and historical treasure trove and has UNESCO World Heritage status;
  • Cividale, founded by Julius Caesar in 50 BC, also entered the UNESCO heritage list in 2011;
  • Trieste, once one of the oldest parts of the Hapsburg Monarchy, is the capital of the region.  Giovanni Tiepolo (1696 – 1770), arguably the greatest painter of 18th century Europe, spent four of his early years in Udine and we will see some of his frescos and paintings in the town;
  • Other places on the itinerary will include Grado, San Daniele del Friuli and Spilimbergo.
Cost: £1199 per person (£159 single supplement).

Flights: Bristol to Venice and return.

Hotel: 4* Hotel Astoria, Udine. Central location. Includes 4 nights B&B and 3 nights HB with water, wine and coffee included with the dinner. There will also be a drinks reception on the first evening.

Includes: Tour manager, guides, headsets and executive coach for the duration of the tour.

Extras: Entrance fees, travel insurance, coach transfers to and from Bristol airport, gratuities.
