Chavenage House
is a privately-owned Elizabethan house situated in Gloucestershire a
few miles from Tetbury. Only two families have owned the house,
the present owners since 1891 and the Stephens family before them.
Colonel Nathaniel Stephens, MP for Gloucestershire during the Civil War
was a supporter of Oliver Cromwell and there are many interesting rooms
housing tapestries, fine furniture, pictures and relics of the
Cromwellian period. Of particular note is the Main Hall where a
contemporary screen forms a minstrels’ gallery. Latterly,
Chavenage has been used as a location for TV and film productions, most
recently Wolf Hall and Poldark, where Chavenage features as Trenwith
House. Tours of the house are conducted by members of the family
which adds a truly personal touch to the experience.
Following the visit to Chavenage, there will be an opportunity to spend
some time in Tetbury, a particularly attractive Cotswold town with many
antique shops, cafés and unique independent retailers. In the
Middle Ages, it was an important market town for the wool trade and the
town centre is still dominated by the Market House built in 1655.
