A unique opportunity to visit two Roman sites in the company of Dr Mark Lewis, Curatorial Officer at National Roman Legion Museum, Caerleon.  A visit to the Roman Temple and Gardens at Lydney,  lunch at Chepstow and a tour of the Roman town of Caerwent.

At Lydney Park Estate we will see the Roman Temple excavated in 1805 by the Right Honourable Charles Bathurst, an ancestor of the present Lord Bledisloe. In 1928 the site was re-excavated by Sir Mortimer Wheeler and his wife Tessa. One of his assistants was J. R. Tolkein who wrote 'Lord of the Rings'. A large collection of interesting artefacts can be seen in the museum. There is also a garden with exotic rare trees and there should be an impressive display of colourful azaleas at this time of the year. Coffee (not included) can be taken in the dining room of the house with vistas to the River Severn. We will have a light lunch in Chepstow, opposite the castle, close to the river and next door to Chepstow Museum which you will have time to visit. Leaving for Caerwent we follow the route of the Roman Via Julia. Many people pass by on the A48 without realizing they are passing the Roman capital of the Silures tribe. Dr Mark Lewis will take us around part of the walls and excavated sites. We will finish with tea and cakes in the local church and in the entrance porch is the famous Civitas Silurum stone bearing an important inscription which confirms the existence of the Civitas Silurum or the Romanised self-governing body of the Silures tribe.

PLEASE NOTE: Sensible flat shoes suitable for walking must be worn as some difficult terrain will be encountered. Also note you will be out of doors at both sites so be prepared for rain, but we will try and order sun!
