This
excursion will provide an opportunity to visit the medieval Saxon town
of Winchcombe, one of the most attractive in the Cotswolds. Winchcombe
retains much of its old world charm with a variety of shops, inns, and
restaurants. The Church of St Peter’s has a number of historic features
including some forty of the finest gargoyles in the UK. En route there
will be a stop of half an hour at the family-owned ‘ecological’
Gloucester Services on the M5, well known for its facilities and
general ambience, including an attractive farm shop.
Not far from Winchcombe is Stanway House, a fine medieval manor house
in the same family ownership since the 1590’s, where we are fortunate
to have been able to arrange a private guided visit encompassing both
the house and its unique gardens. The C18 water garden has recently
been restored, while the single jet gravity-driven fountain is the
highest of its kind in the world. The visit will conclude with a light
cream tea.
