Iolo Morganwg

A talk by Dr Geraint Jenkins

It is possible that Friends are unaware of the extraordinary connection between Iolo Morganwg and the peripatetic National Eisteddfod of Wales, which this year will be held here in Cardiff. In this talk, Professor Geraint Jenkins will outline how Iolo’s creative thinking led to the foundation of the Gorsedd ceremonies and rituals, and his place in the Celtic Revival of the eighteenth century.

One of the most prominent of the many brilliant Welsh historians of the last half century, Dr Jenkins is the former Director of the internationally renowned Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies at Aberystwyth, after a period as Professor and Head of Welsh History at the university there. He has also been Chair and Director of Research of the Board of Celtic Studies, Currently on the Board of the British Academy, he has published extensively on Early and Modern Welsh History, and is a great believer in collaborative research projects. One of these team efforts scrutinized the Visual Culture of Wales. Another team, again led by himself, investigated Iolo Morganwg and the Romantic Traditions. The research, edited by Dr Jenkins, has been published by the University of Wales Press.
