Dr. Hefin Mathias is a former headteacher of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni. He also taught history there and in Rhydfelen and Llanhari schools, after beginning his teaching career in the Greater London area. A prolific author of history textbooks including Roman Britain and Wales and Britain in the Medieval World 1066-1500, his contribution to the teaching of history in Wales has been invaluable. His extensive research since his retirement has been mainly on the period of the first half of the twentieth century. He is also a frequent broadcaster and an extremely popular public speaker.

In this talk, Dr. Mathias will concentrate on Lord Davies’ work in promoting world peace. His support for humanitarian projects like the League of Nations and an International Police Force was tireless. Like Gwendoline and Margaret, his younger sisters, David Davies continued the philanthropic family tradition of donating generously to good causes, both locally and nationally. Another concern was public health, and particularly the establishment of hospitals for tuberculosis patients. The foundation of the Temple of Peace in Cardiff saw the combined administration for these two great movements under one roof.
