'Taffy was a Welshman ....'

A talk by Professor ChristineJames

In this entertaining talk, Professor James will discuss the ways in which the Welsh have been portrayed in English popular verse from medieval times. Their mischievous and often humorous treatment has led to the creation of the stereotypical Welshman, as seen in images and cartoons throughout the years, as indeed has also happened with the Irishman, the Scot and representatives of other countries. Here, at the start of 2019, is an opportunity to consider if the traditional stereotype still holds true!

A native of the Rhondda Valley, Christine learned Welsh as a second language, specialising in the laws of Hywel Dda for her doctorate. After working as an editorial officer for the volume Cydymaith i Lenyddiaeth Cymru (UWP 1986)/ The Oxford Companion to the Literature of Wales (OUP 1986), she was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Welsh at Swansea University. She recently retired as Head of the Department. A Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, she is a Chief Bard who won the National Eisteddfod’s Crown in 2005 with a poem inspired by the Museum’s Impressionist Collection, and has published several poetry collections. She served as Archdruid for the Gorsedd of Bards from 2013 – 2016, the first woman ever to hold this position.
