'Elgar and the Hidden Enigmas'

A talk by Geraint Lewis

Note that due to the refurbishment of the Reardon Smith Lecture Theatre, this talk will now take place in the Main Building, Cardiff University. If you enter the University through the Park Place entrance, please turn immediately to the LEFT. You will then be directed to the Wallace Lecture Theatre.
Parking is normally available in the University car-park.

The whole perception of British Music at home and abroad changed overnight on June 17th, 1899 following the premiere of Elgar's "Enigma" Variations in London. A little-known provincial figure was suddenly an international master. But what did the music actually mean and how and why did it transform the English musical landscape? This talk will examine some of the secrets under the surface.

Geraint Lewis was born in Cardiff and having been a Junior Scholar at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama went to read Music at St. John's College, Cambridge where he was a pupil of the legendary George Guest. He now teaches, lectures, writes and composes following a varied career in academia, recording and broadcasting. After over a decade directing the North Wales Music Festival between 1992-2004 he is now artistic director of the Lower Machen Festival since January 2018.

The admission charge for the talk, which includes coffee in the University is £8 for tickets ordered in advance or £10 at the door. Booking in advance is helpful for placing the order for coffee served afer the talk.
