| A
period of major reductions in public spending has posed particularly
difficult challenges for the cultural sector, with a third of the Arts
Council of Wales’s clients losing their funding in recent years. Is
this a peripheral matter, or should we be more concerned about the
impact on society? What place should the arts command in the priorities of government and society in the current economic climate, and why? For instance, what place should the arts command in the fields of education and the economy? And what prospects are there of finding new income streams for the arts? In short, what does the future hold for the arts in Wales? This talk provides an opportunity for the Friends to consider and reflect upon many of the issues facing the arts in Wales today. In his early career Geraint worked as a journalist both in Cardiff, Newcastle and London, becoming Assistant Editor for the Western Mail, before moving on to become HTV Head News and Current Affairs and later Assistant Controller of Programmes in 1982. From this post, after a short period in Newcastle, he returned to Cardiff in 1990 to become BBC Controller Wales, a post he held for ten years. Following his retirement from the BBC, Geraint has undertaken many key roles in a wide range of arts organisations in Wales including holding positions as Chair of the Welsh National Opera, Chair of the Arts Council Wales, Board Member of the Wales Millennium Centre, Board member of the Artes Mundi Visual Arts Prize and a trustee of the Shakespeare Schools Foundation. With his wide involvement in so many aspects of arts and culture in Wales, there is no better person than Geraint to talk about the challenges now facing “The arts in an age of austerity’. |
