| Born
in Treforest, Morfydd Owen studied at University College, Cardiff and
the Royal Academy of Music before working as a singer, pianist and
composer. Fascinating friendships with D.H. Lawrence and Ezra Pound, a
chequered marriage to Freudian psychoanalyst Ernest Jones, and an
irregular death at the age of 26 have fostered her mythic status ever
since. This talk, illustrated with archive images and recordings of
Morfydd’s music, plus extracts from her correspondence is given by Dr
Rhian Davies, whose research has restored the composer to international
attention. Widely recognised as an innovative historian of twentieth-century British culture, Dr Davies has been awarded Visiting Fellowships at Indiana University, Bloomington, and at the National Library of Australia, Canberra. She is also an experienced broadcaster, making regular appearances on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. As Artistic Director of the Gregynog Music Festivals since 2006, her curatorial work there has been described as ‘rewarding’ (The Guardian), ‘progressive’ (Classical Music) and ‘inspiring’ (The Times). |
