Friends of National Museum Wales in a visit to the Côte d'Azur in the Autumn of
2016. The weather in the south of France in late October is usually very pleasant with temperatures of about 18⁰ to 20⁰C. From the late 19th century and into the 20th century, many artists visited and made their homes on the Côte d’Azur. They were attracted by the climate and particularly the quality of the light. This has resulted in this area having the greatest concentration of Modern Art in Europe. These artists included Monet, Signac, Renoir, Matisse, Braque, Bonnard, Dufy, Picabia, Chagall and Picasso. All chose to live in the south of France. Our short stay in Nice will give us a unique opportunity to visit museums and other places connected with some of these artists. Our visit will include: • Matisse’s Chapelle du Rosaire at Vence • The Maeght Foundation at Saint- Paul de Vence • The Musée Picasso at Antibes • Renoir’s house at Cagnes sur Mer We finish with a light lunch at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. |
