Friends of National Museum Wales in a visit to Sicily in late Spring
2016. At this time of year the weather should be just perfect for touring this lovely island. Due to its strategic trading location in the Mediterranean, Sicily was fought over and colonized through the centuries by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Normans, Byzantine Empire and then by the Moors. Each of these civilisations left their mark on the island providing us today with a rich collection of stunning sites. This island, by virtue of its size, makes it necessary to stay in different locations, thus enabling us to visit many of the important ones. We will be amazed at the well preserved amphitheatres, temples and tombs, Roman villas, museums and churches, palaces and art by Antonella da Messina and Caravaggio whose paintings will be remembered long after we return home. The following will be included on our visit: • Guided tour of Palermo, visiting Palazzo dei Normanni, Duomo, Regional Archeological Museum, Capella Pallatina, Abatellis Museum and Massimo Theatre • Duomo in Monreale • Segesta & Mozia • Cefalu 12th Century Norman Cathedral and small museum with paintings by Antonella da Messina • Agrigento – Valley of Temples with guided tour and visit to the Archeological Museum • Lunch at Kolymbetra Gardens • Piazza Armerina & Villa Romana de Casale – guided tour • Taoramina – guided tour • Alcantra Gorge • Syracuse – we visit this important Greek city of the 5th to 3rd centuries BC: earliest Doric Temple, Temple of Apollo, Teatro Romano, the Alter of Hieron II and Teatro Greco • Messina & Reggio Calabria with ferry included, Museum Bronzi di Riace with guide. |
