The
Friends are invited to join the above event given by Madge O'Keefe. The
church of St. Cadoc at Llancarfan is in the heart of this small village
in Vale of Glamorgan. The spacious church, which in the later Middle
Ages belonged to Gloucester Abbey, contains a stoup and interesting
remains of a rood screen, now adapted as a reredos. In early 2008, architects discovered a medieval wall painting in the church under layers of whitewash. Now, after six years of restoration work, conservators have uncovered startlingly bold images of the seven deadly sins, a royal family, a ghoulish death figure - and what has been described as one of the largest and most spectacular tableaux of St George and the Dragon ever seen in a British church. The easiest way to get to St. Cadoc's, Llancarfan is from the signposted turning at Bonvilston, off the A48, the stretch of road between Cardiff and Cowbridge. The programme for the day is as follows; 11.00 am. Group will arrive under their own steam and meet in Fox & Hounds Car Park to meet our Guide and assemble at St Cadocs Church for our talk. 1.00 pm.approx. Return to Fox & Hounds for lunch and departure. Unfortunately numbers have to be restricted to 30 people, with a minimum of 20 in order to make the project viable. The cost of the Study Day will be £20.00 p.p. and will include a set lunch at the Fox & Hounds, a donation to the church and expenses for the leaders. To join us please send your cheque made payable to ‘Friends of the National Museum Wales’ and completed form to; Dorn Swaffield, Lower House Barns, Michaelston-le-Pit, Dinas Powys, Vale of Glamorgan. CF64 4HE. Tel: 029 2051 3956. E-mails to “Dorn.swaffield@gmail.com” Should the visit be oversubscribed, a random selection of the applications will take place, and those who are unlucky may receive priority vouchers for a future event.
